The Clark Associates companies, including Clark Service Group, have been serving central Pennsylvania and the greater east coast area since January 2nd 1971. Brothers Glenn and Lloyd Clark began in the electrical contracting business with the fundamental belief that “you get what you give” in relation to your customer’s and your community. While the Clark Associates companies have expanded far beyond electrical contracting, their founding principles still drive company operations today.

Clark Associates is committed to its local communities and seeks to support community outreach whenever possible through its charitable foundation; The Clark Foundation. In the last year, the Clark Foundation raised over $100,000 for charitable organizations and has set a goal to far exceed that number in the coming year. Because our company’s culture emphasizes responsibility and sharing with others, we are honored to give back to the communities in which we do business.

Employees are encouraged throughout the year to participate in volunteer opportunities organized by the Charitable Foundation staff. Clark Service Group, a division of Clark Associates, is proud to promote our employees in their efforts at being a leader in various organizations. Regional Technical Supervisor, Bryan Warfel, Field Technician, Marty Hauser, and Procurement Specialist, Marcie Byrd, briefly shared their experience with the Charitable Foundation.

“I was looking for a scratch and dent popcorn machine for the Penn Manor Junior Comets Football concession stand. I was directed immediately to the foundation. They offered to give me a new unit, and so they did. When I went to the Restaurant Store to purchase the supplies needed to operate the machine, the store offered free popcorn and cups.”
                                                        -Bryan Warfel

“Rhawnhurst Turning Point it is a youth center in Philadelphia that I have involvement with. Due to budget cuts and the increased need for grants, I referred them to the Charitable Foundation. The foundation was more than willing to help and was extremely generous in its donation.”

                                                        -Marty Hauser

“I volunteer with a lot of different organizations. One that is near and dear to my heart is Olivia’s House, a grief and loss center for children. The organization does incredible things for children who have suffered a loss of a family member or pet, and their services are 100% free to the community. When Olivia’s House was in need of a small grant to run one of its more needed programs, the Charitable Foundation did not hesitate to provide the grant. The Charitable Foundation has done amazing things for these organizations right here in our own community.”

                                                       -Marcie Byrd

As 2015 comes to an end, Clark Service Group would like to reflect on the past year and the progress it has made in its expansion with help from community support, our amazing customers, and our dedicated employees. We are thankful to be able to continue to provide top notch service, customer care, and overall satisfaction to Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, and most recently, Florida.
Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year to All!

Increasing the Efficiency of Your Refrigeration Equipment

In today’s competitive foodservice world it is important to cut unnecessary costs wherever possible. Being an industry that consumes more energy per square foot than any other industry, it is critical to eliminate unnecessary energy consumption wherever possible. According to San Diego Gas & Electric, refrigeration equipment accounts for up to 24% of a restaurant’s energy consumption. Increasing the efficiency of your refrigeration equipment will decrease expensive energy usage and help to extend the life of your valuable equipment.

Planned Maintenance Programs
Planned Maintenance (PM) on foodservice and refrigeration equipment can decrease energy consumption on each piece of equipment anywhere from 10%-30%. Clark Service Group suggests quarterly planned maintenance services for most foodservice operations to ensure that your equipment is running at peak efficiency. PM consists of services that reset equipment efficiency to near factory standards through the cleaning and sanitizing of equipment, inspection of key parts, filter replacement, part lubrication, and calibration of key sensors.

Upgrade to Energy Efficient Equipment
When purchasing equipment, it is important to focus on a products total cost of ownership. An Energy Star qualified piece of equipment may cost $500 more up front, but could save you thousands in utility costs in the long run. Foodservice operators should also replace light fixtures within your refrigeration units with Energy Star qualified light bulbs to reduce energy consumption and decrease heat production. In addition, LED light bulbs have an average life span that's 10-50 times longer than an average light bulb.
Annual Energy Savings from Upgrading to an Energy Star Qualified Product*:
  • Refrigerators: $70 in electricity
  • Freezers: $320 in electricity
  • Light Bulbs (Replacing 8 Light Bulbs): $330 in electricity

In addition to planned maintenance programs and upgrading to energy efficient equipment there are also steps you can take to increase the efficiency of your refrigeration equipment today:
  • Purchase equipment with spring loaded doors
    • Spring loaded doors shut faster, seal tighter,  and decrease cold air leakage
  • Clean your gaskets
    • Clean gaskets create a better seal & prevent cold air from escaping
  • Properly load the unit with foodservice product
    • Make sure you load your unit properly by not overcrowding the top shelf which blocks airflow throughout your unit causing the unit to work harder and distribute cold air unevenly. Space product out evenly on the shelves and ensure that there is ample room for air flow between products.
  • Keep refrigeration away from high humidity equipment like dishwashers
    • The higher the humidity, the more energy it takes for a refrigerator to cool. Ensure that your refrigerator is away from moisture producing equipment like dishwashers and steamers.
  • Make sure equipment is properly ventilated
    • Your refrigeration unit should have plenty of space to discard the hot air it has removed in the refrigeration process. If hot air is trapped around the unit, it will have to work harder to produce the desired temperature inside of the unit.
  • Do not use walk-ins like reach-ins
    • Walk-in refrigerators are meant to store items for an extended amount of time. If you are constantly going in and out of your walk-in the unit will work inefficiently to keep the desired temperature in the larger space. We have seen this cause numerous problems with the defrost cycles of the units. If there are products you know you are going to need frequently throughout the day, place them in a reach-in to avoid inefficiencies.
  • Make sure coils are clean
    • Coils should be cleaned with compressed air and a brush on a regular basis. When the coils are clogged with dirt and dust the coils can’t release heat - decreasing the efficiency of the product.
